28,000 Trees Planted to Boost Biodiversity in Glen Innes District.
28,000 native trees and shrubs have been planted across the Glen Innes region as part of a major biodiversity project coordinated by GLENRAC and funded through the NSW Environmental Trust's Restoration and Rehabilitation Program.
The two-year project set out to support on-ground environmental outcomes by increasing the extent of native habitat across the landscape—particularly in areas previously cleared and now in need of habitat regeneration. It has done just that, with 34 landholders participating in the plantings.
GLENRAC Chief Executive Officer said the project delivered far more than initially expected. “We originally aimed to work with 12 landholders. By the end of the project, we had 34 landholders involved—meaning the environmental benefits of these plantings are now being shared much more widely across our district,” the CEO said.“This broader reach means more properties are now contributing to habitat restoration, and more landholders have gained practical experience they can apply and share into the future.”
Many of the planting sites adjoin National Reserve areas or sit within fragmented landscapes, creating new habitat corridors that will support native flora and fauna for years to come. In addition to plantings, GLENRAC delivered two field days for landholders, focusing on best-practice revegetation methods. Environmental specialist David Carr from Stringybark Ecological led the sessions, which covered ground preparation, seedling care, and long-term weed control strategies.
Field day sites were hosted by the Glen Innes Agriculture Research & Advisory Station in 2023 and local landholder Norman Whitaker in 2024, both of whom shared their practical insights and planting experiences with attendees.
Local contractors were engaged to support larger-scale planting sites, contributing to strong establishment of native vegetation while also supporting regional employment.
“The long-term benefits of this project will be seen in improved biodiversity, better habitat connectivity, and increased awareness and capability among landholders to implement environmental management practices,” the CEO said.
This project reflects GLENRAC’s ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable land management and strengthening natural resource outcomes across the Glen Innes district.
